Karel's geography is historically correct. Middlebrough was just in the old North Riding of Yorkshire, prior to the 1974 local government reorganisation.

I didn't say - because it goes without saying - face value.

This is slightly off the point of this thread but since it is being read by people who were potentially interested in Southampton Gooner's tickets... I have, at very short notice, three spare Wigan tickets. It's a long story but essentially involves the illness of the wife of one of those who was me...

Quartz,

You are right - third Reform Act of 1884 was the key one and the voting age was lowered to 18 in 1969.

(However, if I was to be really picky I'd point to your surperfluous apostrophes in 1880s etc)

A bit of history. In years gone by footballers could find themselves in a very diffficult position financially. They were constrained by a maximum wage while they played. Then they were forced to retire in their mid 30s having missed out the opportunity to "learn a trade" in their late tee...

I agree with the Editor on this one. It's very easy to have a go at club level. But the simple fact is that they generate lots of income for the club. If we want to compete, and don't want to pay through the nose for our "normal" seats, we need club level. If there are rich people willing ...

Nothbankdamien,

In the interests of accuracy, I suppose I should point out:

JFK's inauguration speech was in 1961 (not 1960)

Chruchill's speech was in 1940 (not 1941)

The moon landing was in 1969 (not 1967)

I think you have to distinguish between footballing intelligence and general intelligence. There is no doubt that Gazza has a phenomenal football brain. It's just that the rest of his brain is not up to much. I think Wenger doesn't so much look for brains as background and attitude. That is why he b...

Since everybody else is giving their views, let me offer mine. Singing holocaust songs: Totally, utterly unacceptable and a disgrace to the good name of the club. VCC said earlier on this thread that anyone who grasses a fan to a steward is killing the game. I disagree when the action in question is...

Since I think this new song will be with us for a while, can we agree on the words? At the Cottage on Saturday, I heard two versions of the third line: "Give him the ball and he will score" and "Give him the ball and Ade will score". Indeed, both versions can be found on this for...

I'm with Spudmasher on this. I didn't think much of the article. There is a general tendency on this forum , but also very evident elsewhere, to criticise anyone who is a slightly less loyal fan. So anyone who has only recently become a fan - perhaps attracted by the quality of football we now play ...

I think Sir Chips Keswick, who moves in some very influential circles, would know how to spell the Mayor of London's name and would not address a petition to "President Blair". I think we can safely assume he has no involvement and that the club would consider they have better things to de...

I fear this article may be unduly optimistic. A large part of Arsenal's medium term financial strategy is based on property development. Not just the old stadium (where most of the flats have been pre-sold) but in the surrounding area such as Queensland Road. If, as seems likely, the current turmoli...

And in 1978 they rolled over against us in the FA Cup semi final. Two own goals in the first half (though Supermac, inevitably, claimed both of them) meant it was probably the easiest semi final we've ever played.

I've been grateful to them ever since.
