And so it came to pass that the first leg of Arsenal Women's Champions League semi-final in front of more than 40,000 at the Emirates last weekend saw a 2-1 defeat for Renee Slegers side. 

Mariona Caldentey's succesful spot-kick in the 78th minute levelled the score after Kadidiatou Diani's first half opener, but Melchie Dumornay rapidly restored the French side's lead ahead of today's (Sunday, April 27) crunch second leg. 

Lyon are the Women's Champions League's most decorated club - with an impressive 12 finals under their belt - and will be aiming to add to their eight European titles.

However, Arsenal have European pedigree of their own, and still remain the only English side to have lifted this tournament, back during their annus mirablis season of 2006-07 when they lifted the quadruple. 

The team looked in excelent spirits during open training for the media on Friday, and will believe they can still win through to the showpiece final in Lisbon at the end of May. 

Slegers' side's outstanding 'remontada' against Real Madrid last month underlines the Gunners have the firepower to blitz the French in the second leg, following their overturning a two goal deficit against Real at the Emirates, to win through 3-0 on a memorable night in North London (3-2 on agg). 

While it has been nearly 20 years since their stirring Women's Champions League triumph, an early goal in Lyon would surely have Slegers's AWFC side believing that this could well be their time. They certainly won't be lacking in support with more than 500 loyal Gooners travelling to the match. 

Should Arsenal remove Lyon, it could well be Barcelona in wait for them in the final in the Portuguese capital next month, with the Catalan's 4-1 up against Chelsea from the first leg.

Arsenal: Daphne van Domselaar trained on Friday at London Colney with hopes rising that the Gunners first choice keeper can be fit for the season-defining clash, replacing Manuela Zinsberger in the process. 

Gunners captain Kim Little did not train with the squad on Friday.

Lotte Wubben-Moy, who penned a new deal earlier this week, was also back in full training, with Lina Hurtig training individually.
