Prologue

And so it came to pass that a patched up Arsenal side showed character and courage, class and determination, to edge through against the mighty Real Madrid after a clash for the ages.

But that's enough daydreaming about the Gunners beating the La Liga giants 1-0 on aggregate over two legs back in 2006, because the future is now.

For this evening, Arsenal's game of the season - of any season when the imperious Real Madrid come to town - is here when they host Carlo Ancelotti's 15-time winners and current holders at the Emirates, bidding to replicate their stirring victory over 180 minutes 19 long years ago.

While Arsenal's form has been indifferent in the Premier League, they have shone in Europe this term, finishing third in the 36 club league table, prior to demolishing PSV 9-3 on aggregate, which included a 7-1 shellacking for the Dutch side at their Phillips Stadion in Eindhoven.

Mikel Arteta's side have had 13 different scorers in the competition this season, with only Borussia Dortmund in 2016-17 (15) and Madrid in 2001-02 (14) having more in a single campaign.

While the Bernabeu titans have won just three of their last eight away games in the Champions League, with three of those games coming in England.

Madrid currently sit in second spot behind Barcelona, four points behind after conceding in the 95th minute to lose 2-1 at home to Valencia on Saturday, their second defeat in five league games.

Real also have six players who could miss the second leg should they be cautioned in this game - Lucas Vazquez, Vinicius Jr, Luka Modric, Endrick, Antonio Rudiger and Eduardo Camavinga.

While Gabriel Martinelli and Jurrien Timber are one booking away from their own one-match bans.

It promises to be a cracker. Fans are urged to get there early with plans for red and white Tifo displays organised.

See you there. Come on you Gunners
