Unpleasant Possibilities

By Richard Smith

For two years running Spurs have the chance to confirm one of Arsenal's rivals winning the Premier League - meaning the Gunners have to stand and applaud new champions Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, May 11.

I watched a bit of the Leicester vs Liverpool match on Easter Sunday, in the vain hope that Jamie Vardy might grab an unlikely winner, and groaned when they hit the post.

How can a side go so many home matches without scoring a single goal?

I’m not sure what I was hoping for.

Was it still some faint hope that, after the 4-0 drubbing of Ipswich, we could still snatch the title?

That match certainly reminded me of what a team we are and how we might have been had we not lost one or both of Bukayo Saka and Martin Ødergaard (amonst others, but especially them) for almost half the season.

Then I stepped away, only to return to see it was the inevitable 0-1 Liverpool victory.

That leaves a number of unpleasant possibilities.

If we beat Crystal Palace in midweek, Liverpool will be crowned champions if they beat Sp*rz.

That means, for two years running, that lot down the road have played the match that finally settles the title is out of our reach. Will they all be supporting Liverpool as they did Man City last season? And to think, we made them safe from relegation by beating Ipswich!

The next dreadful scenario is that by the time we go to Anfield, the title will be won, and this will be the first game played there since it was settled. Will we have to stand on the pitch and applaud them, giving them a guard of honour, As fair-minded as I like to think myself, and the Premier League table never lies, watching that happen will be especially hard to take. I imagine it will be for Saka, Rice and the rest of them.

At least we still have PSG to look forward to! And then next season…
